Love Your Body

Since the expression “love your body” has been overused, let me rephrase it as a question: “Why would you choose to dislike your body?”

You must have heard before that there is not even a single body in the world that is perfect. If not, here it is. All of them have flaws, even that lady with tons of plastic surgeries… So, don’t beat yourself up if you think you look big, or because you have muffin tops, or even because you lack them! You are who you are; of course you can work a bit harder to make your body healthier, but not to any extreme, please. Don’t risk your health just to be able to modify your body. And please don’t try to be anybody else! Be humble, and accept what you’ve got. From there, everything will be easier.

We also need to respect our bodies, they provide at least some level of mobility to most people. Body and mind should be like a team, working towards the ideal life for both. I have heard the following sentence from many yoga teachers quoting some ancient teachings: “The body is your temple. Keep it pure and clean for the soul to reside in”. ~B.K.S Even if you disagree at first, just stop to think about this. You could even relate this to the instant karma idea: take good care of your body, and it will give back good things to you. If you decide to jump 1,000 times every day, what do you think is going to happen? You’ll be in great shape soon. Cool! But if you don’t stretch and do other things to pamper the body, it will soon start to complain through soreness, aches and even broken bones or torn up ligaments in your legs/knees. Don’t ignore your body’s calls for help! So, consider being nice to your body, and take good care of it. That does not mean you should sit throughout your whole day to be good to your knees and legs, just counterbalance hard movements with softer ones.

Sitting on a couch ingesting junk every day is also a way to mistreat your body. Soon you will hear its calls through a stomach ache, intestinal problems, and many other ways our bodies have to tell us something is not being done right. Again, do not ignore it.

I am just trying to emphasize here the fact that your body deserves attention, love, and respect. Love your body the way it is. Can you at least try it? You will probably be surprised with people telling you the next day or so how you look different and maybe how you glow differently! Or sometimes they aren’t able to notice anything for their own reasons… It does not matter what they say (or don’t say), you will be your number one fan, and that is a big deal! So, please value yourself, and make your own thoughts about yourself much more important than the ones from other people. It’s not their fault; they just can’t consider all that is going on inside you, so most of them judge from the outside, from the appearances; but your self-worth is way more relevant.

I know the sentence “you are beautiful inside and that’s what matters” has become a cliché, but it is true: Beauty is in you. Accept yourself, you are just the way you should be! Now, go out there already and be proud of what you’ve got! A world full of possibilities is waiting for you!

You’re absolutely right! When I stop and really think about it, I am amazed beyond words at the things my body can do to keep on going no matter how I treat it, to heal itself and repair things I don’t even know are wrong. This is a great reminder!

Yes, Kari, our bodies are capable of handling a LOT, and don’t even ask for anythign in return. At least once in a while they deserve a bit of attention.
