Everything changes all the time in the world. There is a flow in life, and for that to happen things need to change. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with it. A lot of times people get used to what they are doing, they feel safe and secure knowing their routine and trying to deal with little changes that come their way. Then, out of nowhere, a big change comes and boom! The person feels lost, and asks, “what am I going to do?”, or “how can I go back to the way it was before?”. Well, sometimes, it can’t go back, that just won’t happen, so we somehow need to view that change as a lesson, and learn from it. It is not always clear though. It could take years to finally understand what was needed from you then. The main point is, try not to fight it; it’s better to accept it, and then move on to learn how to deal with this new situation.
This is a tough lesson; it took me a while to grasp it. To deal with changes doesn’t mean to be passive. But it doesn’t mean to be aggressive and fight the change to try and make it look the way it was before either. Use this energy that wants to resist the change to embrace it in the best way possible for you. And you will find a balance, a way to act between resistance and inertia, that will provide you with what you need and allow you to grow with this experience.
Here is an easy example. If you go catch a train, get to the train station and find out the train is already leaving the platform because of a change in schedule, are you going to sit and cry? Will that take you to your destination? Of course not! So, embrace this change. Either you run after the train (yes, in some cities you could do that and still catch the train!) or you go to the information booth and try to exchange your ticket for another one, since it was not your fault.
Now, a life changing example: You end up moving to another place you didn’t want to live in, but given the circumstances there are no alternatives. You are going to have to make it work. Or are you going to complain everyday about your life? Will that take you somewhere? Nope! Are you going to waste all your energy by thinking of how wonderful it would be if you were somewhere else the whole time? That will just drain your energy! Get over with it, and make life in this place nice for you.
Changes are usually uncomfortable, but learn to embrace them, they are lessons brought to you. Seize them, learn with them, so you can advance. They don’t request reaction, just thoughtful action. If you give opportunities a chance, if you keep your eyes open, nice things will come before your eyes, and if you are paying attention, you will be able to enjoy them. But if you turn your head to everything that passes by with a big frown on your face, joy won’t miraculously show up. You need to be open for that, and remember that joy is inside you, so no matter where you are, you can feel joyful.
